What is AI agent?
An AI agent is a program built around a language model that can take actions, not just answer. It receives a goal, decides which tools to call, such as a calendar, CRM or email, observes the result and continues until the task is done or it needs a human.

Agent versus assistant
An assistant replies. An agent acts. The difference is tools: an agent has permission to read and write in your systems, which is why scoping those permissions is the first design decision.
In practice most business agents are narrow: one job, three to six tools, clear stop conditions. Broad, do-anything agents are harder to trust and rarely worth it for an SME.
